How many solar panels do I need? A North Macedonia guide

Short answer: most households in North Macedonia need between 6 and 14 panels (≈ 3–6 kWp). Below we show how to size yours from your EVN bill, with worked examples, prosumer rules, and a free calculator.

The 30-second method

  1. Take your annual consumption in kWh (sum of 12 monthly bills, or monthly × 12).
  2. Divide by 1,400 — the typical annual yield per kWp in North Macedonia.
  3. That number is your system size in kWp. Multiply by ~2.3 to get panel count (assuming 440 W panels).

Example: 4,800 kWh/year ÷ 1,400 ≈ 3.4 kWp 8 panels.

Why 1,400 kWh per kWp?

North Macedonia gets 280+ sunny days a year, with global horizontal irradiation between 1,400 and 1,600 kWh/m²/year across Skopje, Bitola and the Vardar valley. A well-oriented (south, 30–35° tilt) rooftop PV system reliably delivers around 1,400 kWh per installed kWp — we use this as a conservative planning number. EVN prosumer rules (what changes the math)

  • Net-metering style credit: surplus kWh you export to the grid are credited on your bill at the regulated export rate.
  • Self-consumption pays most: a kWh you use directly is worth your full retail tariff (VT/NT); an exported kWh is worth less. Sizing to your consumption — not maxing the roof — usually wins on ROI.
  • VT / NT split matters: most solar production happens during VT (high) hours, which is exactly when grid power costs the most — this is why payback beats the naive “bill ÷ generation” estimate.
  • Battery is optional: with a strong export tariff, batteries are mainly for outage resilience and pushing self-consumption from ~40% to ~85%.

What size should you actually buy?

For a typical Macedonian household (400–500 kWh/month), a 5 kWp system (~12 panels) is the sweet spot — it covers heating shoulders, summer A/C, and leaves headroom for an EV or heat pump in the next 3–5 years. Going much larger only pays back if you have year-round high daytime use (workshop, pool, EV charging at home).

How many solar panels for a 100 m² house?

Roof area isn't the constraint in NM — consumption is. A 100 m² home using 400 kWh/month still only needs ~8 panels (~16 m²), well within any pitched roof.

Do panels work in winter?

Yes — winter production drops to ~30–40% of summer, but cold panels are actually more efficient than hot ones. Annual numbers above already average winter in.
